"Apple's Latest AirPods Pro: A Potentially Affordable Hearing Aid Solution for Millions"
During its recent product launch event, Apple introduced a new functionality for its AirPods Pro model, positioning the wireless earbuds as clinical-grade, over-the-counter hearing aids. This move aims to assist over a billion individuals with mild to moderate hearing impairments, according to Sumbul Ahmad Desai, Apple’s vice president of health.
The new hearing aid feature on the AirPods Pro 2 is designed to enhance specific frequency ranges, making sounds clearer and more vibrant for users. Apple also highlighted the use of machine learning to adjust the audio in real-time throughout the day. This feature could provide a more affordable and accessible option for those with hearing loss, as traditional prescription hearing aids can be costly.
However, the AirPods Pro 2 may not be suitable for all hearing loss cases. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that nearly 30 million American adults have some form of hearing loss, but only a fraction seek help, often due to the high cost of medical visits and hearing aids. Apple's announcement follows the FDA's approval of over-the-counter hearing aids two years ago, allowing adults with mild to moderate hearing loss to purchase aids without a doctor's prescription.
To utilize the new hearing aid feature on the AirPods Pro 2, users will undergo a hearing test that analyzes their hearing loss through a series of tones. The test results will then personalize the AirPods Pro for the user's specific hearing needs. It's important to note that over-the-counter hearing aids are not recommended for those under 18 or for those with severe or profound hearing loss, and they should consult a healthcare professional.
Apple anticipates receiving FDA clearance for the AirPods Pro 2 soon, which would officially classify the product as a medical device. The hearing assistance features are set to roll out in over 100 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan, later this year.
While the integration of health features into consumer technology is not new for Apple — its Apple Watch can detect irregular heart rhythms, for example — the expansion into hearing health is a significant step. The potential for increased accessibility and affordability in hearing aid technology is a positive development for the millions of people living with untreated hearing loss. However, the relatively short battery life of the AirPods Pro 2, compared to the longer battery life of traditional hearing aids, has been noted as a drawback by some users.
