A new chapter has unfolded in the ongoing rivalry between Spotify and Apple, this time focusing on the control of volume levels. The music streaming giant has accused Apple of ceasing to support a feature that previously allowed Spotify users to adjust the volume on connected devices using the iOS device's volume buttons through Spotify Connect. While Spotify is actively seeking a resolution, users are currently required to manage volume levels via the app's volume slider. It's important to note that this issue is exclusive to iOS devices and does not extend to Bluetooth or AirPlay connections, nor does it affect Android users.
"Apple has ended the support for a feature that previously permitted Spotify to manage the volume on connected devices using the volume buttons on iOS devices," Spotify detailed in a customer support document. "As we collaborate with Apple to address this, users can effortlessly control the volume on their connected devices directly from within the Spotify app."
Spotify Connect is a functionality that enables users to link their accounts with a variety of speakers, televisions, and other compatible devices, all from within the Spotify app. The feature supports both Bluetooth and WiFi connections, presenting users with a list of available devices when they tap the display/speaker icon on the app's media player. Once a device is selected, users can fully control it through the Spotify app, offering a more streamlined experience compared to navigating through device settings.
Previously, this included the capability to use the volume buttons on an iPhone to adjust the volume. According to TechCrunch, this feature was operational on Apple TV and HomePod. However, Apple has informed Spotify that it must integrate with HomePod to regain this functionality. Spotify's direct integration with HomePod has been notably absent since the device's introduction in 2018. Other music services like Pandora, YouTube Music, Deezer, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio have since been added to HomePod's compatibility list.
Spotify is now prompting users to adjust the volume within the app, displaying a notification when the volume buttons are pressed. If users are already within the app, a volume slider will appear immediately. While this method is less convenient than the previous one, it is expected to be a temporary measure. Additionally, it appears that Google Cast on iOS is also affected by a similar issue, as reported by users on Spotify's forums in February.
TechCrunch reports that Spotify is accusing Apple of violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is designed to prevent dominant companies from engaging in unfair practices with their products and services, including issues of interoperability with operating systems and software features. This month, Spotify was finally able to display pricing within its app in the EU, following a €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) fine in March for restrictions Apple imposed on other music streaming apps on the App Store.
