Unlocking the Beauty Cabinet: Top DIY Makeup Remover Recipes for Radiant Skin

Oct 15, 2024 By Rebecca Stewart

Creative DIY Makeup Remover Solutions For the beauty enthusiasts who revel in crafting their own cosmetic concoctions or for those unexpected moments when you're without your go-to makeup remover, there are ingenious alternatives to commercial products that perform exceptionally well.

We've tapped into the expertise of several makeup artists who gladly shared their preferred DIY makeup removers, ranging from straightforward single-ingredient options to more elaborate recipes that prove to be highly effective.

Regardless of the method you opt for, stubborn makeup like long-lasting mascara and foundation will effortlessly be eliminated.

Olive Oil: The Versatile Liquid Gold Olive oil, recognized for its multifaceted benefits, also serves as an excellent DIY makeup remover. It's the preferred choice of Marie Watkinson, a beauty aficionado and the initiator of NYC's Spa Chicks On The Go.

She remarks, "It's a splendid and uncomplicated technique for removing eye makeup. I moisten a cotton pad with water, then apply a liberal amount of olive oil, and swiftly glide it over my eyes to erase all makeup, including mascara."

Olive oil is typically pure and unrefined, making it less likely to trigger breakouts, and it also offers softening and conditioning properties to the skin. Coconut Oil: A Tropical Alternative Rachel Lozina, an esthetician and the founder of Blue Water Spa in New York, points out that any oil generally works well for cleansing purposes.

"Oil has the capacity to dissolve dirt and makeup from the skin, making it easier to cleanse thoroughly," she elaborates. While her top pick is olive oil, coconut oil can be a delightful alternative if you're in the mood for something tropical or if that's what you have readily available.

It's important to note that coconut oil is more suitable for those with dry skin, rather than oily or acne-prone skin, and should be thoroughly rinsed off post-application. Jojoba Oil: A Skin-Friendly Option Another remarkable oil for makeup removal is jojoba oil, which effectively breaks down makeup, dirt, and impurities without stripping the skin of its essential oils.

"Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin's natural sebum, making it non-comedogenic," explains Alexis Pfropper, an esthetician and the founder of asthetik skincare. "It's improbable to clog pores or lead to acne breakouts, making it appropriate for all skin types, including those that are oily and acne-prone." Oil and Baking Soda: A Potent Combination Elina Fedotova, an aesthetician and the founder of Elina Organics, suggests a mixture of oil and a minuscule amount of baking soda for tackling particularly stubborn silicone-based or conventional foundations.

"This mixture will help remove more residue from silicone, but it should be used only for the face, avoiding the eye area," she advises. Jojoba, coconut, or olive oil can be utilized for this purpose. Ensure to cleanse and rinse your skin well after application.

Micellar Water: A Convenient Option If you have micellar water at your disposal, you possess a straightforward and highly effective makeup remover. Lozina describes it as an excellent alternative that can be relied upon in a pinch.

"Micellar water, which is oil suspended in soft water, has a tendency to pick up any leftover makeup, oil, or dirt on the skin," she clarifies. Aloe Vera: A Soothing Solution For a gentle and soothing DIY makeup remover, the aloe vera plant is an excellent resource, particularly suitable for sensitive skin. This ingredient is surprisingly effective at removing light, non-waterproof makeup.

"Apply a small quantity of aloe vera gel to a cotton pad or your fingertips and gently massage it onto your face to remove makeup, then rinse with water," Pfropper recommends.

"While it may not be as potent against waterproof makeup, it's perfect for light makeup removal and leaves the skin feeling refreshed." Witch Hazel: An Astringent Choice Witch hazel is another accessible option and is an astringent ingredient, making it more fitting for those with oily skin, according to Lozina.

However, for individuals with normal or dry skin, it might not be the most suitable choice unless followed by a hydrating serum and moisturizer.

Oat Flour, Water, and Honey: A Gentle Scrub Fedotova recommends a mixture of oat flour, water, and honey for a gentle scrub that also functions as a DIY makeup remover, ideal for those with congested or oily skin.

"Combine a quarter cup of water with a quarter cup of flour, then add a teaspoon of honey and blend to a creamy consistency," she instructs.

"Apply this mask for up to 10 minutes, and when you wash it off, massage your skin well, allowing the oat particles to act as a scrub.

Honey has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and helps to decongest pores."

By exploring these DIY alternatives, you can maintain your beauty routine with ease, even when your usual makeup remover is out of reach. These natural and cost-effective solutions are not only kind to your skin but also to your wallet.
